Atlanta, GA (June 10, 2013) – Atlanta Mission is very excited to announce the acquisition of the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children as the two ministries come together to create a city unified in ending homelessness.

The Atlanta Mission has served homeless men, women and children in Atlanta since 1938 and became the first entity in the city and the U.S. to offer services to homeless women in October of 1969. In addition, the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children has provided a safe haven and dedicated day services to women and children for the past 29 years. Together, the two organizations have over 105 combined years of service and share a strong commitment to transforming the lives of women and children in Atlanta. The Atlanta Day Shelter joins Atlanta Mission’s four existing campuses and becomes the organization’s second ministry location for women in the city.

“It’s an exciting day in Atlanta for the women and children who were homeless as Atlanta Mission and the Atlanta Day Shelter come together to better serve the community,” said Jim Reese, President/CEO at Atlanta Mission. Over the last 18 months, Atlanta Mission has taken an extensive look at industry best practices and looked for ways to improve our efforts of ending homelessness in Atlanta. Through that research, we learned that there is a critical need to provide day services and additional opportunities to build relationships with the individuals that we serve. Coming together allows the Atlanta Mission to expand their services to day services and allows the Atlanta Day Shelter to take full advantage of all the continuum of care of the Atlanta Mission. We believe that for some time now, God has been preparing this opportunity for our two organizations to come together to better serve the women and children of Atlanta.”

Ginny Nickles, Executive Director at the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children added: “Together, The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children and the Atlanta Mission are enhancing the services provided to homeless women and children, enriching the experiences that they have and expanding the opportunity for them to get back on their feet by empowering them to do so.”

The city’s largest and longest-running provider of homeless services, Atlanta Mission transforms, through Christ, the lives of those facing homelessness. Established in 1938, Atlanta Mission provides overnight shelter, job attainment programming, long-term residential discipleship programming and transitional housing for more than 950 homeless men, women and children daily.
